The Animit

After almost 2 years on the Northern New Jersey music scene, The Animit has released their self-produced full length debut to an eager and dedicated fan base. An Unfortunate Truth was recorded and mixed by producer/engineer Chris Badami (Dillinger Escape Plan w/Mike Patton, The Early November, Hidden in Plain view) at Portrait Recording Studios and mastered by Alan Douches (Chemical Brothers, The Misfits, Sepultura) at West West side music in January 2004.

Written over the span of two years and recorded in two weeks, An Unfortunate Truth is less a collection of songs than it is a journey through the mind of singer Sean Thoman. Sean's lyrics paint vivid images of vast, hallucinogenic dreamscapes while expounding the necessity for the evolution of the human mind. Musically, The Animit creates an intense and flowing environment. Guitarist Brian Arthur's style is at once heavy and spacey, quirky and in-your-face. Drummer Matt Cunningham's musical maturity combined with the energy usually found in one who has just discovered music for the first time provides the rhythmic foundation and clever interplay demanded by Brian's left-of-center writing style. Bassist Rich Sobotka's counter-melodies and rhythms, less-is-more approach, and painstaking attention to his instrument's tone completes The Animit's sound.

During the summer of 2002, The Animit honed their songwriting and performance technique in Brian's basement. A few sweltering months in the cramped space prompted them to move to Rich's basement, and the real work began in earnest. Writing and rehearsing feverishly, The Animit completed most of what was to become An Unfortunate Truth within five months. The Animit has not stopped since. For over a year, The Animit played at least a gig a week (see Venues sidebar). Regular gigs at local bars and restaurants let The Animit stretch out and experiment for a quickly growing and devoted following. Performances at tri-state area universities and clubs were received with equal fervor by more critical and experienced crowds.

The Animit is not your typical rock band. Their spin on music, life, and reality will be a breath of fresh air for music fans who are tired of recycled cookie cutter crap. The Animit hopes to tour and release their music nationally with (or without) the support of a label. Driven by a deepseated love of music and the desire to succeed, The Animit are in it for the long haul. However, in January 2005, bassist Rich left the band on friendly terms. The Animit then changed their name to "Symmetry Breaking"
