The 13Th Warrior

The 13th Warrior is a 1999 action film based on Michael Crichton's novel Eaters of the Dead, directed by Crichton with John McTiernan, and starring Antonio Banderas as Ahmed ibn Fahdlan (Aḩmad ibn Faḑlān) and Vladimir Kulich as Buliwyf (Beowulf). The frame story is adapted from the tenth-century Arabic writings of Ibn Faḑlān, while the central sequence of events is an adaptation of the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf. The movie goes to some pains to achieve a historical atmosphere, including use of Norwegian, Greek, and Latin dialogue. This film is released by Touchstone Pictures, and distributed by Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, Inc.

Excerpt: Viking's Invocation Recited Before Going Into Battle

Lo, there do I see my father
Lo, there do I see my mother and my sisters
and my brothers
Lo, there do I see the line of my people back
to the beginning
Lo, they do call to me
They bid me take place among them
in the Halls of Valhalla
Where the brave may live forever...
