Thanjavur District

Thanjavur District is one of the 30 districts of the state of Tamil Nadu, in southeastern India. Its capital is Thanjavur (Tanjore).

Geography

The district is located in the centre-east of the state, on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. On account of its fertility it has been called the "Granary of Southern India". It is irrigated by an elaborate system of dams, cuts and canals in connection with the rivers Cauvery and Coleroon, and the soil is exceedingly productive. The delta of the Cauvery occupies the flat northern part, which is highly cultivated, dotted over with groves of coconut trees, and is one of the most densely populated tracts in India. The staple crop is rice. The chief seaport is Negapatam.

Culture

Tanjore is a land of temples, many of them being of very early date.
