Tazewell County is a county located in the state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 128,485. Its county seat is Pekin, Illinois ⁶.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,704 km² (658 mi²). 1,681 km² (649 mi²) of it is land and 23 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.37% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 128,485 people, 50,327 households, and 35,883 families residing in the county. The population density is 76/km² (198/mi²). There are 52,973 housing units at an average density of 32/km² (82/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.40% White, 0.88% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 50,327 households out of which 31.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.96. In the county the population is spread out with 24.40% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.10 males. The median income for a household in the county is $45,250, and the median income for a family is $53,412. Males have a median income of $41,148 versus $24,781 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,511. 6.30% of the population and 4.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.40% of those under the age of 18 and 5.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
