TatabnyaTatabnya is a town in Central Hungary, and it is the capital of county Komrom-Esztergom. The city is located in the valley between the Gerecse and Vrtes Mountains, some 55 km from the capital. By the virtue of its location, the city is a railway and road junction. Motorway M1 (E60, E75) from Vienna to Budapest passes through the outer city limits, railwaylines Budapest - Vienna go through the city. Tatabnya is the seat of Komrom-Esztergom county and possesses the same rights as a county. It lies on 94 km2 and ist is 14 km long, the number of its inhabitants is about 76,000. Archeological findings prove that humans have been living here since Stone Age. The Turul monument, above the city on the top of Gerecse Mountain, is the largest bird statue in Central Europe. The Szelim Cave and the forest park of Gerecse Mountain are popular beauty spots. The three historic predecessor settlements of Tatabnya are Alsgalla, Felsőgalla and Bnhida. After the opening of the first mines at the turn of the century, a miner colony had settled down, which was later named the village of Tatabnya. Tatabnya was declared city in 1947 whith the fusion of the four settlements. The industrial character of the city was significant until the political changes. After that the importance of heavy industry and mining decreased and the economic structure of the city has changed remarkably.
