Tangshan

Tangshan () is a prefecture-level city in Hebei province, People's Republic of China.

History

Tangshan suffered an earthquake of magnitude 8.2 on July 28, 1976, which caused enormous casualties (see Tangshan earthquake). The official death toll was 255,000, but many experts believe that two or three times that number died, making it the most destructive earthquake of modern times. As a result of the quake, most of the town had to be rebuilt.

Geography

Tangshan is in eastern Hebei province and is located 135 km from Beijing in the east. A round-city ring road in the form of an expressway exists, linking it with the Jingshen Expressway, running from Beijing to Shenyang. It is northeast of Tianjin, with the Tangjin Expressway linking to it.

Economy

Tangshan is sometimes called "the capital of porcelain in north China".
