Tangier American Legation Museum

The Tangier American Legation Museum (TALM), a thriving cultural center, museum, conference center and library in the heart of the old medina in Tangier, MoroccoTangier, is housed in the first national historic landmark of the Untied States located overseas. Saved from destruction by a small but dedicated group now known as the Tangier American Legation Museum Society, (TALMS) the museum now operates with a locally-hired staff under the leadership of the Museum Director, Thor Kuniholm. The historical significance of the Legation is tied to the relationship between the United States and Morocco that extends back to the 18th century when, only a year after the young nation that would become the United States declared its independence, when Sultan Sidi Muhammad Ben Abdullah sought diplomatic relations with the Americans. The Treaty of Peace and Friendship the United States signed with Morocco in 1787 established the longest continually valid treaty relationship the United States has had with a foreign power.
