Talvin Singh

Talvin Singh is a British DJ and tabla player, known for creating an innovative fusion of bhangra and drum n bass. Singh grew up in Leytonstone and began playing the tabla, breakdancing and listening to punk rock as a child. Though he lived in India for a time, he moved back to the UK in the late 1980s and began working as a musician with such artists as the Indigo Girls, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Sun Ra, Björk and the Future Sound of London. In 1995, Singh founded a club night called Anokha which combined South Asian punk bands with drum n bass DJs. He signed to Island for a compilation of Anokha productions and worked as a remixer until releasing his solo debut, OK, in 1998. The album won him the Mercury Music Prize for 1999. His second album Ha was released in 1999.
