Tales From The Crypt (Movie)Tales from the Crypt is a British horror movie, made in 1972 by Amicus Productions, consisting of five separate segments, based on stories from the EC Comics title of the same name. In the movie, five strangers encounter the mysterious cryptkeeper in a crypt, and he tells each in turn the manner of their death. Unlike the television series of Tales from the Crypt, the cryptkeeper is a human played by Ralph Richardson, rather than a puppet. The film starred Joan Collins and Peter Cushing. Synopsis In the movie, a group of five strangers go with a tourist group to view some old caves. Suddenly, they become separated from the main group and find themselves in an enclosed room with the mysterious cryptkeeper. The cryptkeeper then details how each of the strangers will die. The first segment, titled All Through The House, is one of the best known stories in the television series of Tales from the Crypt. The story concerns a woman (played by Joan Collins) who kills her husband on Christmas Eve. As she prepares to hide his body, she hears a radio announcement which says a maniac is on the loose. She then notices the maniac outside her house, but because of her husband's murdered body, she is unable to call the police. The segment ends with the maniac breaking into the house, dressed as Santa Claus, and killing the woman. In the second segment, Reflection of Death, follows a man (played by Ian Hendry), who abandons his family, to run away with his mistress. As they drive off together, they are involved in a horrific car accident. He wakes up in the wrecked car, and attempts to hitch-hike home, but no-one will stop for him. When he reaches his house, he finds his wife at home with another man. He knocks on the door, but his wife screams upon seeing him and slams the door. He then tries visiting his mistress's apartment, discovering that she is blind. She tells him that five years have passed since the accident, which blinded her and was believed to have resulted in his death. The man then turns to a mirror to discover that he is a zombie. He then wakes up in the car with his mistress to find that the whole story had been a dream - but that he about to crash once again. Some fans of Tales of the Crypt believe this story was inspired by the story Whirlpool, in which a character endlessly relives his death. The third segment, Poetic Justice sees a father and son drive their neighbour (played by Peter Cushing) to suicide by conducting a smear campaign against him. However, on Valentine's Day one year later, the neighbour returns from the grave to kill the father and son. The title of the segment comes from the way the neighbour exacts his revenge. Before his death, the neighbour received a bunch of valentines with hateful messages. He believed the valentines came from his neighbours, but all of them were from the son. This caused him to commit suicide. However, when the neighbour returns from the grave he kills the son by ripping his heart out and inserting it into a valentine left for the father. The fourth segment, Wish You Were Here, is a retelling of The Monkey's Paw. A businessman is close to financial ruin. His wife discovers a Chinese figurine, and wishes for a fortune, however, her husband is killed on the way to collect it. She then uses her second wish to bring her husband back to the state he was in just before the accident that she believed led to his death - only to discover that he had died just before the accident of a heart attack. She then wishes for him to be brought back to life, though discovers that his body has been embalmed, and she has trapped him in eternal pain. This conclusion has been criticised by fans of the film, since the businessman's body would not have been embalmed prior to the accident. The final segment, titled Blind Alleys, is adapted from one of the best known Tales from the Crypt stories, called Revenge of the Nuts. The story follows a former army major (played by Nigel Patrick), who has recently become the new director of a home for the blind. He makes drastic financial cuts, reducing the heating and rationing food to the patients, while living in luxury with his dog. When he ignores the blind peoples' complaints, they exact their revenge by constructing a maze of narrow corridors in the basement of the building lined with razor blades. They capture and starve the major's dog, and place the major in the centre of the maze, then they release the dog and turn the lights out in the basement. After telling the final tale, the cryptkeeper opens a door to Hell, and the visitors all enter.
