Taftville

Taftville is a small village in Eastern Connecticut. It is a neighborhood of Norwich, but has its own Post Office (zip code: 06380). It was established in the 1860s as a site for the large Ponemah Mills, a cotton mill built at a location on the Shetucket River where a large dam could be built to provide power. The large mill building (building #1) was purported to be the largest weaveshed under one roof at that time. The original worker's were predominantly Irish immigrants, however a strike caused most of them to be replaced with French-Canadians, who came to be more than 70% of the population. The Ponemah Co. operated for about 100 years.
