Supai, Arizona

Supai (Havasupai Havasuuw) is a town located in Coconino County, Arizona. As of the 1990 census, the town had a total population of 423. The town is the capital of the Havasupai Indian Reservation.

Geography

Being located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, the town is only accessible by foot, burro, or by helicopter. Mail and package delivery to the town is thus delayed; delivery time for mail from Bullhead City, Arizona via the United States Postal Service is at least a week (D. Varty, personal communication, 2004). Supai is located at 36°13'27" North, 112°41'38" West (36.224139, -112.693957). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. The town is located 6,591 feet above sea level.

Demographics

As of the census of 1990, there are 423 people, 104 households, and 88 families residing in Supai. The population density is 94.0/km² (248.8/mi²). There are 136 housing units at an average density of 30.2/km² (80.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.56% Native American, 4.96% White, 0.47% Asian, and 0% Black/African American, Pacific Islander, and other races. 0.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 104 households out of which 60.6% are married couples living together, 16.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 15.4% are non-families. 10.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.07. In the town the population is spread out with 39.4% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 33.6% from 25 to 44, 12.5% from 45 to 64, and 5.7% who are 65 years of age or older. For every 100 males there are 98.6 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there are 87.4 females.
