Sugar Hill, New Hampshire

Sugar Hill is a town located in Grafton County, New Hampshire. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 563. It was divided from the town of Lisbon. The first resort-based ski school in the U.S. was opened in Sugar Hill in 1929 by Katharine "Kate" Peckett, with her husband, Austrian immigrant ski instructor Sig Buchmayer. The same year, organized ski trains from Boston began running to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where summer tourist trains had been going for decades. With its fine views of mountains, and clean air, Sugar Hill became a noteworthy resort town and supported many fine hotels, some of which continue operating to this day. The town is bisected by New Hampshire Route 117, west of Franconia and Interstate 93.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 44.6 km² (17.2 mi²). 44.3 km² (17.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.64% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 563 people, 258 households, and 164 families residing in the town. The population density is 12.7/km² (32.9/mi²). There are 385 housing units at an average density of 8.7/km² (22.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.40% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 1.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. 0.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 258 households out of which 22.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% are married couples living together, 4.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.18 and the average family size is 2.72. In the town the population is spread out with 18.1% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 33.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 98.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.3 males. The median income for a household in the town is $49,219, and the median income for a family is $60,288. Males have a median income of $36,667 versus $25,714 for females. The per capita income for the town is $29,743. 5.3% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 10.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
