Succasunna-kenvil, New Jersey

Succasunna-Kenvil is a census-designated place located in Morris County, New Jersey. It is entirely located within the borders of Roxbury township. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 12,569.

History

The name of Succasunna comes from the Lenni-Lenape Indian word for "Black Rock", most likely due to the rich iron-ore deposits in the area. The town was established in 1740. The Hercules munitions factory in Kenvil has had explosions in 1934 killing 6 people, 1940 killing 52 people, and in 1989 shattering windows. United States Highway 46 and New Jersey State Highway 10 pass through the area. The Morristown & Erie Railway runs rail freight service through the area 2-5 times week on its High Bridge Branch.

Geography

Succasunna-Kenvil is located at 40°51'41" North, 74°38'48" West (40.861496, -74.646603). The town of Succasunna-Kenvil is part of the 11th Congressional District and the 25th State District. According to the US Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 17.6 km² (6.8 mi²). 17.3 km² (6.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.77% water.

Politics

The current Representative to the House of Representatives for the 11th Congressional District is Rodney Frelinghuysen (Republican).The Representative to the New Jersey Senate is Anthony R. Bucco (Republican). The representative to the New Jersey General Assembly is Michael Patrick Carroll (Republican) and Richard A. Merkt (Republican)

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 12,569 people, 4,138 households, and 3,475 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 727.6/km² (1,884.3/mi²). There are 4,184 housing units at an average density of 242.2/km² (627.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 92.99% White, 1.34% Black or African American, 0.1% Native American, 4.11% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 3.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,138 households out of which 43.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.5% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.0% are non-families. 13.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.02 and the average family size is 3.33. In the CDP the population is spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.4 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $83,614, and the median income for a family is $90,015. Males have a median income of $64,188 versus $37,841 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $31,923. 2.4% of the population and 1.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.4% of those under the age of 18 and 1.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
