Sturgis, South DakotaSturgis is a city located in Meade County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,442. It is the county seat of Meade County. Sturgis is most famous for being the location of one the largest annual motorcycle events in the world, usually held annually on the first full week of August. Motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the world flock to this usually sleepy town during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Geography Sturgis is located at 44°24'37" North, 103°31'7" West (44.410322, -103.518486). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.7 km² (3.7 mi²). 9.7 km² (3.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Sturgis has been assigned the ZIP code 57785 and the FIPS place code 62100. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,442 people, 2,738 households, and 1,708 families residing in the city. The population density is 665.0/km² (1,723.6/mi²). There are 2,989 housing units at an average density of 308.6/km² (799.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.80% White, 0.20% African American, 2.48% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 1.88% from two or more races. 1.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,738 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.0% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.6% are non-families. 33.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.91. In the city the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $30,253, and the median income for a family is $38,698. Males have a median income of $25,856 versus $18,582 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,763. 12.0% of the population and 11.0% of families are below the poverty line.
