Strikers are the players on a team in football (soccer) in the row nearest to the opposing team's goal, who are therefore principally responsible for scoring goals. Centre forwards, forwards, and attackers in football are usually strikers, although not all forwards or all attackers necessarily only score goals, some contribute to the attack by assisting other players or obstructing the defense. Modern player formations include between one and three strikers; two is most common. Because they score more goals than other players, strikers generally are the best-known and most expensive players on their teams. Well-known strikers See also
