Strath-taieri, New Zealand

Strath Taieri is a large glacial valley and river plateau, surrounded by rugged hill ranges located to the West of Dunedin in Otago. Middlemarch is located to the north of this plateau. The name is a hybrid word, from the Scots Gaelic strath, meaning a broad highland valley, and the Maori name (correct spelling Taiari) of the river which runs through it. A large irrigation scheme has made areas of Strath Taieri arable for farming.
