Sterling, Colorado

Sterling is a city located in Logan County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,360. It is the county seat of Logan County. It is home to the Northeast Junior College and the Sterling Correctional Facility.

Geography

Sterling is located at 40°37'32" North, 103°12'42" West (40.625430, -103.211783). It is approximately 140 road miles northeast of Denver, and is located on Interstate 76. It is in what is called the 'eastern plains' of Colorado. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.8 km² (6.9 mi²). 17.8 km² (6.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 11,360 people, 4,604 households, and 2,790 families residing in the city. The population density is 638.4/km² (1,653.1/mi²). There are 5,171 housing units at an average density of 290.6/km² (752.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 90.75% White, 0.75% African American, 0.79% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 5.60% from other races, and 1.62% from two or more races. 14.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,604 households out of which 30.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% are married couples living together, 10.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.4% are non-families. 34.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 3.03. In the city the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 12.9% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $27,337, and the median income for a family is $39,103. Males have a median income of $27,921 versus $20,508 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,287. 15.2% of the population and 11.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.0% of those under the age of 18 and 12.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
