Stepan Osipovich Makarov

Stepan Osipovich Makarov (1848-1904) was an admiral in the Imperial Russian Navy. He served in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877, and was influential in the fields of marine surveying and tactics. He was made commander of the Russian Pacific Fleet in 1904 during the Russo-Japanese War, but was killed when his flagship Petropavlovsk struck a mine and sank. Makarov
