St. James Township, MichiganSt. James Township is a township located in Charlevoix County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 307. The township was named for James Strang who lead a faction of Mormon settlers to Beaver Island in 1848. Strang created a self-styled kingdom on the island and named the capital, St. James, after himself. The township consists of the northern tip of Beaver Island and a number of other smaller islands. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 818.5 km² (316.0 mi²). 51.8 km² (20.0 mi²) of it is land and 766.7 km² (296.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 93.67% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 307 people, 138 households, and 82 families residing in the township. The population density is 5.9/km² (15.4/mi²). There are 331 housing units at an average density of 6.4/km² (16.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 98.70% White, 0.00% African American, 1.30% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 138 households out of which 24.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% are married couples living together, 5.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.9% are non-families. 34.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.93. In the township the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 2.9% from 18 to 24, 21.2% from 25 to 44, 29.0% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 91.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.0 males. The median income for a household in the township is $33,182, and the median income for a family is $46,250. Males have a median income of $33,000 versus $20,682 for females. The per capita income for the township is $20,109. 6.6% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.5% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
