St. Ignace, MichiganSt. Ignace is a city located in Mackinac County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,678. It is the county seat of Mackinac County6. St. Ignace Township is located just to the north of the city. St. Ignace is the eastern terminus of the western segment of U.S. Highway 2 and the northern terminus of the Mackinac Bridge, which connects the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to the lower peninsula at Mackinaw City. Ferry boats run between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island. Interstate 75 runs over the Mackinac Bridge and through St. Ignace. Michigan State Highway 123 starts a few miles north of St. Ignace and heads north into the Tahquamenon Falls area. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²). 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.37% is water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,678 people, 1,085 households, and 675 families residing in the city. The population density is 383.0/km² (990.7/mi²). There are 1,232 housing units at an average density of 176.2/km² (455.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 71.81% White, 0.30% African American, 19.42% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 7.69% from two or more races. 0.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,085 households out of which 29.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% are non-families. 31.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.96. In the city the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $34,447, and the median income for a family is $45,893. Males have a median income of $29,813 versus $23,017 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,340. 9.0% of the population and 6.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.3% of those under the age of 18 and 9.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
