Squirtle (ゼニガメ Zenigame in Japanese) is a fictional character from the Pokmon franchise. Squirtle's back hardens into a shell soon after its birth. When it feels threatened, Squirtle retracts into its shell and sprays foam from its mouth.

Name origin

Squirtle is probably a portmanteau of squirt and turtle. Zenigame is probably derived from 銭亀 (zeni kame, literally money turtle).

Availability

In Pokmon Red and Blue, Squirtle is one of the starter Pokmon, together with Bulbasaur and Charmander. The same is true in these games' enhanced remakes, Pokmon FireRed and LeafGreen. In Pokmon Yellow, Squirtle is not a starter, but one is given to the player as a gift later on. In Pokmon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, Squirtle can only be obtained through trading with the original three games. In Pokmon Ruby, Sapphire, and Pokmon Colosseum, Squirtle can only be obtained through trading with FireRed and LeafGreen. Squirtle also appears in the Nintendo 64 game Pokmon Snap.

Anime Appearances

For some time, Ash Ketchum had a Squirtle on his team. Abandoned by another trainer, Squirtle joined up with three other Squirtle to form a criminal gang called the Squirtle Squad (Zenigame-gundan), breaking with the "cute" image many people had of this Pokmon. When the Squirtle Squad wound up saving a nearby town from a forest fire, they became the firefighting Pokmon of the town. However, the Squirtle Squad would have to do this without their leader, who joined with Ash. Together, Squirtle accompanied Ash for much of his journey through Kanto, the Orange Islands, and parts of Johto before rejoining the Squirtle Squad. As his trainer loyalties lie clearly with Ash, he also returned to battled on Ash's side briefly in the Johto League Silver Conference. Squirtle has a tough personality, and sometimes wears a pair of dark glasses. Squirtle is often characterised as a "act first and think later" character (contrasting with that of Pikachu and Bulbasaur). Its Water Gun attack is quick and precise, often hitting the same place on a target with consecutive attacks, even if it is upside-down in mid-air. Its Hydro Pump attack turns its shell into a projectile, and is used as a convenient means of escape should it wind up inverted. Squirtle is voiced by Rikako Aikawa in the original Japanese version, and Eric Stuart in the English version.
