Springfield is a city located in Bon Homme County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 792.

Geography

Springfield is located at 42°51'17" North, 97°53'41" West (42.854763, -97.894814). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Springfield has been assigned the ZIP code 57062 and the FIPS place code 60660.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 792 people, 356 households, and 218 families residing in the city. The population density is 470.5/km² (1,211.6/mi²). There are 400 housing units at an average density of 237.6/km² (611.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.43% White, 0.38% African American, 4.80% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. 0.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 356 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.5% are non-families. 33.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.77. In the city the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 23.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.8 males. The median income for a household in the city is $29,464, and the median income for a family is $40,625. Males have a median income of $25,227 versus $21,071 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,863. 9.1% of the population and 8.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.2% of those under the age of 18 and 10.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
