Springfield

Springfield is the most common name for a town in the United States. In fact, there are more Springfields in the US than states. It is so common that the television show, The Simpsons is set in a town generically named "Springfield", creating an intentional mystery around what state the show is set in. (This is a long-standing tradition. As early as the 1950s the radio/television program, Father Knows Best, was set in a generic "Springfield." In the 1950s, the soap The Guiding Light also set its town in a place called "Springfield.") Some viewers of The Simpsons comment that creator Matt Groening chose Springfield as the name of the town since "every state has a city named Springfield". The largest Springfield is located in Massachusetts.
