Spokane County is a county located in the state of Washington. As of 2000, the population is 417,939. The county seat is at Spokane. It is named after the Spokane Indian tribe.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,612 km² (1,781 mi²). 4,568 km² (1,764 mi²) of it is land and 44 km² (17 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.96% water.

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 417,939 people, 163,611 households, and 106,019 families residing in the county. The population density is 92/km² (237/mi²). There are 175,005 housing units at an average density of 38/km² (99/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.39% White, 1.59% Black or African American, 1.40% Native American, 1.88% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 0.82% from other races, and 2.76% from two or more races. 2.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 163,611 households out of which 32.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.90% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.20% are non-families. 28.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.02. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 10.60% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 12.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 96.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.60 males. The median income for a household in the county is $37,308, and the median income for a family is $46,463. Males have a median income of $35,097 versus $25,526 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,233. 12.30% of the population and 8.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.20% of those under the age of 18 and 8.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
