Space Runaway IdeonSpace Runaway Ideon, also known as Legendary Giant God Ideon (Japanese: 伝説巨神イデオン) was an animated television series that aired on Japanese television from 1980 to 1981. It was created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, and was the series worked on immediately after his most famous work, Mobile Suit Gundam. Its Mechanical Designer was Higuchi Yuichi and its characters were designed by Kogawa Tomonori. Space Runaway Ideon begins in 2300 AD, far enough in the future that mankind has begun colonizing other planets. On the planet Solo a group of archeologists come across the mysterious remains of the Ideon - three large armored trucks with the ability to transform into the Godly mecha. They also come across a large spaceship. Coincidently, at that very moment a humanoid alien civilization, known as the Buff Clan comes across Solo and when the daughter of the race's military commander goes down to Solo against orders an interstellar war is triggered. The cities on Solo are obliverated by the Buff Clan soldiers and the survivors, using the Ideon for protection get aboard the space ship, known as the Solo Ship, and flee. They travel from planet to planet, under constant pursuit of the Buff Clan who desire the Ideon and the mysterious energy source behind it, known only as 'Ide'. Like Mobile Suit Gundam before it, Ideon was cancelled due to bad ratings and later revived in the movie theaters. Two movies, A Contact and Be Invoked were released as a double bill in 1982. A Contact featured clips from the first 32 episodes of the TV series. 'Be Invoked' featured a modified version of the final episode of the TV series, in addition to those episodes that never aired, finishing off Ideon once and for all. The apocalyptic ending of this movie cemented Tomino's "Kill Em All" reputation. Space Runaway Ideon is a predecessor of sorts to Neon Genesis Evangelion and deals with many of the same issues. There are a number of homage shots in the Neon Genesis Evangelion movies in which certain scenes are mirrored from 'Be Invoked' almost perfectly.
