Southampton is a town located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 54,712. The Town of Southampton is in the southeast part of the county, partly on the South Fork of the county.

History

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 765.6 km² (295.6 mi²). 359.7 km² (138.9 mi²) of it is land and 405.9 km² (156.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 53.02% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 54,712 people, 21,504 households, and 13,805 families residing in the town. The population density is 152.1/km² (394.0/mi²). There are 35,836 housing units at an average density of 99.6/km² (258.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 87.98% White, 6.62% Black or African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 2.28% from other races, and 1.73% from two or more races. 8.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 21,504 households out of which 27.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% are married couples living together, 9.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.8% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.99. In the town the population is spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 99.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.2 males. The median income for a household in the town is $53,887, and the median income for a family is $65,144. Males have a median income of $47,167 versus $32,054 for females. The per capita income for the town is $31,320. 8.3% of the population and 5.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
