to the East and South, and
Mid Wales

West Wales
to the North and West. The exact extent of the area is loosely-defined, but incorporates the cities of
Cardiff

Newport

South Wales Valleys
(and the
Brecon Beacons National Park
), and
Monmouthshire
. The western border of the region is sometimes defined to include
Swansea
, and the northern boundary is usually taken as
Builth Wells
or the border of
Powys
. The state of
New South Wales

is named after the area.
