South Lyon is a city located in Oakland County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,036.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²). 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 10,036 people, 4,246 households, and 2,704 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,143.0/km² (2,958.2/mi²). There are 4,461 housing units at an average density of 508.1/km² (1,314.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.68% White, 0.39% African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.09% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 1.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,246 households out of which 31.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% are non-families. 30.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.98. In the city the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 36.0% from 25 to 44, 17.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $53,395, and the median income for a family is $67,167. Males have a median income of $53,818 versus $32,083 for females. The per capita income for the city is $26,187. 5.2% of the population and 2.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Businesses

South Lyon has several local businesses along with the usual stores found in normal towns, such as fast food and gas station chains. "The Hotel" is a bar and grill found in the very heart of South Lyon, it has been standing since it became a hotel around 150 years ago.

Schools

South Lyon has one High School (another is being built), two Middle Schools (Centennial and Millennium) with another being built, and six elementary schools (Kent Lake, Sayer, Salem, Dolson, and Brummer).

People

South Lyon is home to America's Last Comic Standing - John Heffron.

Sports

South Lyon has a excellent sport system consisting of the major sports football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and some of the less known sports such as crosscountry, track, bowling, wrestling, and much more. This year the crosscountry team has had an outstanding year placing fourth in the state regionals and placing a student a 115th in the state
