South Hill, New York

South Hill is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in Tompkins County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 6,003. South Hill is a community in the Town of Ithaca. It is a southern suburb of the City of Ithaca and is located near the south end of Cayuga Lake.

Geography

South Hill is located at 42°24'42" North, 76°29'26" West (42.411598, -76.490605). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 15.5 km² (6.0 mi²). 15.3 km² (5.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.50% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,003 people, 1,073 households, and 491 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 392.2/km² (1,015.7/mi²). There are 1,139 housing units at an average density of 74.4/km² (192.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 91.64% White, 2.42% African American, 0.13% Native American, 1.77% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.78% from other races, and 2.23% from two or more races. 2.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,073 households out of which 22.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.9% are married couples living together, 5.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 54.2% are non-families. 31.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.90. In the CDP the population is spread out with 7.1% under the age of 18, 69.3% from 18 to 24, 9.2% from 25 to 44, 8.6% from 45 to 64, and 5.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 20 years. For every 100 females there are 83.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.3 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $43,868, and the median income for a family is $66,364. Males have a median income of $44,500 versus $28,491 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $11,495. 23.1% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
