South Downs National Park

The South Downs National Park is a proposed national park in the South Downs region of England. It stretches from Winchester all the way to Beachy Head. The South Downs is the last of the 12 areas chosen in the 1947 report by a Government committee, chaired by Sir Arthur Hobhouse, which has yet to become a national park. The establishment of a national park in the South Downs received support from the government in September 1999. As of February 2005, a public inquiry is being held to decide the boundaries of the proposed national park. The inquiry has been adjourned until 18 March 2005, when it is expected that inquiry will be closed.http://www.planning-inspectorate.gov.uk/southdowns/ The designation process is expected to take another two to three years, so formal designation as a national park may occur in 2006 or 2007.
