Sophus Nielsen

Sophus "Krlben" Nielsen (born March 15, 1888; died August 6, 1963) is a former Danish football (soccer) player, the first player in history to score ten goals in a full international match. Nielsen's ten goals came on October 22, 1908 when Denmark played France in the 1908 Summer Olympics. The Danes won 17-1; Sophus scored in 3rd, 4th, 6th, 39th, 46th, 48th, 52nd, 64th, 66th, and 76th minutes. Denmark went on to take the silver. Overall, Nielsen played 20 games for Denmark, scoring 16 (according to some reports, 17) goals. He went on to win another silver in the 1912 Olympics. Most of Nielsen's club career with spent with Boldklubben Frem. Nielsen's record was matched in the 1912 Olympics, as Germany's Gottfried Fuchs scored 10 in a 16-0 win against Russia. It wasn't topped until 2001, when Australia's Archie Thompson scored 13 in a 31-0 trashing of American Samoa.
