Sonderborg Castle History The original was build 1170 on an islet in Als Sund (Als Strait) which later on got connected to Als. The castle was part of a big system of fortifications that Valdemar the 1st the Great has build. In the following years Als and Snderborg became an important struggle between the Danish king and the duke of Schleswig and the castle changed side many times. A peak in the history of the castle was the wedding between the later Valdemar the 4. (Atterdag)and the duke's sister, Helvig. From 1460 the castle was a royal part of the duchies and was regularly used by both king Hans and Christian the 2nd during their reigns. 1532-49 the dethroned Christian the 2nd was held prisoner of state at Snderborg Castle. Here he lived with princely conditions, but sometimes closely guarded. The story about the restless king walking around a round table making a groove in it with his thumb is false and fabricate during the 15th century. The capture also was not limited to the blue tower (Bltrn), because sometimes he joined the noble hunts at Als. 1559-71 Snderborg Castle was owned by queen dowager Dorothea and after that Hans the Younger inherited it. During his rule, the castle became centre of a mini duchy, which however was split after his death in 1622. The ruined duchy Snderborg was in 1667 attached to the Danish throne and its representative, the prefect (Amtmanden) took up residence at the castle. 1764 it was handed over to the duke of Augustenborg, but against expectations it did not became residence. During both the first and second Slesvig wars Snderborg Catle was used as a camp hospital and for quartering Danish troops. 1867-1918 the castle was a Prussian barracks. 1921 the Danish state bought the castle from the duke of Augustenborg and was used 1945-46 as an internment camp for persons charged for injurious to the State. Today Since 1921 Snderborg Castle has been domicile of The Museum of Snderborg Castle (Museet p Snderborg Slot), which is the main museum for the former duchy of Slesvig. The museum contains large collections, which illustrate the two Slesvig Wars, WWI and the reunion in 1920. Furthermore the museum has a comprehensive local history collection and an art collection with work from particularly Danish artists with connection to Southern Jutland.
