Socialist Party Of AzaniaThe Socialist Party of Azania (SOPA) is a political party in South Africa. The party was formed on March 21 1998. The forefathers of the party were also founding members of the Black Consciousness Movement, lead by Steven Biko. Among noted members of the party are Strini Moodley, Professor Itumeleng Mosala, Dr. Gomoleo Mokae and Tiyani Lybon Mabasa. SOPA's ideology is derived from both the Black Consciousness Party and from Scientific Socialism. The goal of the party is the liberation of Azania, so that the black people within the country, who are in a majority, can have a voice in its political system. The party was created to the response of the South African government which continues to dominate culturally, socially, and economically in favor of the white South Africans. This state is perpetuated by blacks in position of power who are not attentive to the needs of the fellow blacks in the country, thus calling on party leadership which stands in one accord with the black population of the country. It is the perspective of SOPA, that in order to liberate the poorest of the population from despair is to promote public ownership as the fundamental means of production. In doing so, this plan will in theory, reverse the detrimental effects of the capitalist system, which has placed the poor in desperate situations. Currently the president of SOPA is Lybon Masaba. In the 2004 elections, SOPA received 0.1% of the vote. Links - Official SOPA Website: http://www.capegateway.gov.za/eng/directories/political_parties/71877
