Slovak Euro Coins

right The euro (EUR or ) is the common currency for twelve countries within the European Union. The euro coins have two different sides; one common, European side showing the value of the coin and one national side featuring a design chosen by the EU member state where the coin was minted. Each member state has one or more designs unique to that country. For images of the common side and a detailed description of the coins, see Euro coins. Slovakia is a member of the European Union since May 2004, but it is not a member of the European Monetary Union and therefore still uses its own currency, the Slovak Koruna. Slovakia will probably adopt Euro as its official currency on 1 January 2009. It will then have to propose its own design of all eight Euro coins. Although there already have been some discussions and even some proposals, there is no official Slovak Euro coin yet. Currently, an official public contest for the new coin designs is in progress. The deadline is 31 January, 2005. Detailed conditions of the contest are available on the page of the National Bank of Slovakia http://www.nbs.sk.
