Plot

The story is about Sam Baldwin (played by Tom Hanks), who lost his true love, and Annie Reed (played by Meg Ryan), who hasn't found hers yet. Sam lives on a houseboat on the west shore of Seattle's Lake Union, and Annie lives in Baltimore. One evening around Christmas time she hears a boy (Jonah) on the radio who tells how he misses his mother and how his father misses his wife. Sam is called on the phone and Annie is immediately attracted to him. Although Annie is about to get married to her fianc Walter (played by Bill Pullman), she decides to travel to Seattle to find out more about him. The 1957 movie An Affair to Remember is referred to several times in Sleepless in Seattle. It is shown playing during the film itself, and many plot elements are borrowed.
