Slater is a city located in Story County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,306.

Geography

Slater is located at 41°52'49" North, 93°40'54" West (41.880265, -93.681642). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. There are several parks within the city, and a noticeable attraction is the bi-annual 4th of July celebration.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,306 people, 532 households, and 369 families residing in the city. The population density is 410.0/km² (1,057.6/mi²). There are 555 housing units at an average density of 174.2/km² (449.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 99.46% White, 0.31% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.08% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 532 households out of which 34.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.7% are married couples living together, 5.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% are non-families. 28.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.03. In the city the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.8 males. The median income for a household in the city is $45,417, and the median income for a family is $58,036. Males have a median income of $37,760 versus $27,031 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,647. 2.0% of the population and 0.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
