Sixth Form CertificateThe Sixth Form Certificate was a New Zealand secondary school qualification gained at the end of NZ Form VI (= UK Lower Sixth Form). Introduced in 1970, this qualification ran alongside the NZ University Entrance until 1986, then ran stand-alone till 2002 then in 2003 and 2004 ran alongside the second level of the National Certificate of Educational Achievement. It was abolished in 2005. The system was entirely evaluated by continuous assessment, with no formal external examination. This was seen as an alternative to the two varieties of University Entrance (by accreditation and examination). Grades were awarded in individual subjects based on the student's rank in the school, on a 1-9 scale where 1 is the best and 9 is the worst. The amount of 1s, 2s, 3s etc available were based on the school's previous year's School Certificate results. These grades then were allocated top to bottom to students. A student's result card could look like this: SUBJECT GRADE ENGLISH 5 CHEMISTRY 4 DESIGN TECHNOLOGY 4 HISTORY OF ART 3 MATHEMATICS 1 * * * * * * * * * The total score of the top four subjects was noted if the certificant chose to enter university with the Certificate. At 2004 (the last time the certificate was awarded) the maximum score allowed was 16. In the above example the certificant would have passed with a score of 12. The distribution of grades varied from year to year; the average distribution was: Grade proportion of students 1 top 4% 2 next 6% 3 .. 10% 4 .. 17% 5 .. 22% 6 .. 22% 7 .. 12% 8 .. 16% 9 .. 0% A Grade 5 was considered by many to be a minimum pass and a Grade 7 in a subject was the equivalent to a pass in the subject at School Certificate level. This qualification was abolished in 2005 and replaced by the National Certificate of Educational Achievement at level 2. The certificate was awarded by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority from 1990 to 2004. See also: AS-level See also External link Sixth Form Certificate website
