Siren, Wisconsin

Siren is a village located in Burnett County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 988. The village is located within the Town of Siren.

Geography

Siren is located at 45°47'1" North, 92°22'48" West (45.783633, -92.380161). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.77% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 988 people, 413 households, and 230 families residing in the village. The population density is 346.8/km² (895.1/mi²). There are 499 housing units at an average density of 175.1/km² (452.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 95.85% White, 0.10% Black or African American, 2.02% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. 0.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 413 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.7% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.3% are non-families. 39.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.85. In the village the population is spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 26.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.3 males. The median income for a household in the village is $24,342, and the median income for a family is $31,797. Males have a median income of $27,250 versus $21,635 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,792. 18.3% of the population and 12.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.6% of those under the age of 18 and 18.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
