Simmering, ViennaSimmering is the 11th district of Vienna, the capital of Austria. It is the part of town travellers arriving at Schwechat Airport invariably have to cross on their way to the city. Simmering's most striking feature is probably the largest cemetery in Vienna, the Zentralfriedhof, opened in 1874, with lots of Ehrengrber (Brahms, Beethoven, Schnberg, Schubert and "the waltz king" Johann Strau are interred there). In 2001 Simmering got a new landmark called Gasometer. It is four former gas-holders that had been built inside the communal gasworks in 1896-1899 and that were revitalized and converted in 1999-2001 after they had been decommissioned in 1984. They were converted from gas-tanks to new buildings filled with apartments, a student residence, offices and a shopping mall. Links
