sign bit
is the
bit
in a
computer numbering format
which indicates the
sign
of the number. Typically the bit is the
most significant bit
in the format. Typically if the sign bit is
1
the number is negative (in the case of
2s complement integers
) or non-positive (for the case of
ones complement integers
,
sign-magnitude integers
, and
floating point
numbers). Typically if the sign bit is
0
the number is non-negative.
