shorinjiryu

Shorinjiryu is a name used by various styles of karate that evolved from Sokon Matsumura of Shuri-te lineage, through to Chotoku Kyan (1870-1945). Various disciples of Kyan carried on his teachings, synthesising their own methods and those acquired from other teachers, into their own systems. In the modern world there are various groups of Shorinjiryu, including - Shorinjiryu Kenkokan Karate, founded by Kori Hisataka (1907-1988) - Shorinjiryu Seibukan, founded by - Okinawan Shorinjiryu, founded by Joen Nakazato (1922-) - Shorinjiryu Renshinkan, founded by Isamu Tamotsu Most groups of Shorinjiryu utilise shorter stances, and emphasise speed and mobility. Expanded use of the hips is stressed, and the vertical fist is often used for punching. Many Shorinjiryu groups have experimented with the use of Bogu (protective equipment)
