Shinnok

Shinnok is a character in the Mortal Kombat video games. First appearing in MK4, Shinnok replaced Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung as the primary boss of the game, however he remained a playable character in Mortal Kombat four. While not possessing Shang Tsung's shapeshifting ability, Shinnok does possess the ability to mimic the fighting styles of his enemies. Shinnok has been referred to as a "fallen elder god", who had apparently started a major conflict between realms and the gods. To put a stop to Shinnok's threat, Rayden, the god of thunder and lightning, waged a war that plunged the earth into centuries of darkness, banishing Shinnok to the nether realm.

However, with the help of Quan Chi, a powerful wizard, Shinnok was able to escape the nether realm and become a threat once again. Shinnok reappears in and Mortal Kombat Gold. According to the second Mortal Kombat movie, , Shinnok is the father of Rayden and Shao Kahn, who wishes for power not only over all realms, but over the gods as well. He favors Shao Kahn, considering Rayden too weak and caring to be his son. Shinnok orders Shao Kahn to kill his brother while guiding him in his path to merging the parallel universe of Earth and Outworld. Shinnok is later imprisoned by the elder gods and Rayden is offered his position in their ranks.
