Setbal

Setbal is a city in Portugal located on the northern bank of the Sado river estuary, home to 100,000 people, aproximately 40 Km south of Portugal's capital, Lisboa (Lisbon). It is also the seat of the district of Setbal. In the begining of the 20th century, Setbal was an important center for Portugal's fishing industry, sardines in particular. None of the many factories operate today. Although its industrial life is in decline, tourism is seen as the big opportunity for the future since the nearby coast of Arrbida, a natural park, offers beautiful beaches and unspoilt nature. A colony of dolphins lives in the Sado River, and across the river from Setbal lies the peninsula of Tria, where several high-rise luxury resorts were built and abandoned after the realization they were being constructed on sinking, unstable land. Setbal is the birthplace of the Portuguese satirical poet Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage, the classical singer Lusa Todi, as well as world famous football coach Jos Mourinho.
