SeramyuSeraMyū (セラミュー seramyū, abbreviated from "Sailor Moon musical" セーラームーン・ミュージカル sērāmūn myūjikaru ) is the common abbreviation for are a series of live theatre productions based on Naoko Takeuchi's metaseries Sailor Moon. The series consists of over 26 musicals which have had more than 800 performances since the show opened summer 1993. The producers generally follow and expand upon plot concepts presented in the anime and manga, however there are several original plot lines. General Information The series is staged by a division of the Japanese entertainment company Bandai and generally runs twice a year Recently, in the winter the only venue for the musicals is the Sunshine Theatre in the Ikebukuro area of Tokyo; however in the summer it does also tour to the larger cities in Japan. The lastest incarnation of the series, "The New Legend of Kaguya Island" Edition (新・かぐや島伝説 <改訂版> Shin Kaguyashima Densetsu (kaiteban)) will be staged in January of 2005. After the January 2005 show, the series will then go on a "short hiatus," according to the current producer, BMO. The current lead actor and actress of the show will also be departing. The musicals are tied together by a few major elements: a theme song, usually used in battle when the senshi defeat the antagonist; sight gags, characters in drag, puns, sock puppets, etc...; and songs generally tailored for the same characters or groupings of characters: romance songs between Usagi and Mamoru, Outer Senshi attack songs, and villain songs. Kaiteban, or "Revised Versions," are another major aspect of Sailor Moon Musicals. Generally new musicals are staged in the summer and then are revised for in the winter. Major plot elements stay the same--but tend to be more fleshed out in revised versions. Parts of the show are generally rearranged; villains who were only partially defeated in the original version of the show are fully defeated or healed, and actresses who are "graduating" (leaving the show) are often given more solo parts or speaking lines. The producers generally follow and expand upon plot concepts presented in the anime and manga. For example, a collective romance between the four Inner Senshi and the Shitennō from former lives was taken from a manga image picturing the two groups paired off in romantic couples. The series creator, Naoko Takeuchi, explained that this image was used as an inspiration for the first musical of the series 外伝ダークキングダム復活 -- "Alternative Legend: the Strange Revival of the Dark Kingdom". In addition to the borrowing from the anime and manga versions of Sailor Moon, the show also has two mostly original plot lines: "Kaguya Shima Densetsu" and "Last Dracul" series. Actors The "stage" is another term used widely to refer to groupings of the musicals. Generally, western fans break the stages down by the actresses who played Sailor Moon. Anza Ōyama was the first and currently longest running Sailor Moon actress. Her stage ran parallel to the manga and anime, and the plots reflect this fact. Fumina Hara's stage was the second stage and featured the only fully original musical "The Legend of Kaguya Island." Miyuki Kanbe was the "third stage" Sailor Moon which consisted of the mostly original "Last Dracul Series", and the "Fourth Stage" of Sailor Moon Musicals will end with Marina Kuroki's graduation in January of 2005. Her stage is the second longest running of the musicals. Her stage featured two musicals close to the anime and manga plot lines, as well as two revised revivals of mostly original story lines. The producers of the show have broken the musical down into three stages with different criteria: As with western fans, the "first stage" was Anza's stage. The first stage ended with Anza's graduation. This stage also had a nearly full graduation with all of the main actresses being replaced. Fumina, Miyuki, and part of Marina's stage are considered to be the "second stage." The second stage ended with the remake of the original "Stage Final" musical. Another major influence for SeraMyū seems to be the Takarazuka Revue, an all female Japanese theatre troupe whose actors and characters were the basis of Haruka and Michiru, according to Naoko Takeuchi. While not an entirely female cast, many male characters are played by female actors. (It's worth noting that one male actor has reversed this practise and played a female character.)
