Second Anglo-maratha War
The
Second Anglo-Maratha War
(
1803
-
1805
) was a second conflict between
Britain
and the
Maratha empire
in
India
. It was caused by the
Peshwa
Baji Rao II
's defeat by the
Holkar
rulers of
Indore
, and his acceptance of British protection by the
Treaty of Bassein
in December
1802
. The
Sindhia
family of
Gwalior
and the
Bhonsle
family of
Nagpur
contested the agreement, but they were defeated, respectively, at
Laswari
and
Delhi
by Lord Lake and at
Assaye
and
Argaon
by Sir
Arthur Wellesley
. The
Holkar
rulers of
Indore
then joined in. Peace was concluded in 1805, with the British acquiring
Orissa
, and parts of western
Gujarat
and
Bundelkhand
from the Maratha. The Maratha were left with a free hand in much of central India, and the Sindhia Maharajas maintained control of much of
Rajasthan
.
