Sea To Sky UniversitySea to Sky University is a new private non-profit liberal arts university in Squamish, British Columbia, Canada. It is set to open its doors in September 2006. It was created May 29, 2002 following the passing of the private-member's Sea to Sky University Act by the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. Campus The campus, which will be built on a 97-hectare (240-acre) site, is expected to include academic buildings, student and faculty residences, and recreational/commercial facilities. Additionally, 960 market-housing units will be constructed on the property, which will provide a major revenue stream for the university. Construction on the units will begin in April 2005. As Squamish is located mid-way between Vancouver and Whistler, the SSU campus will be used during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, for some as-yet undetermined aspect of the Games' infrastructure requirements. Academics SSU's approach to academics is rooted in the liberal arts tradition, emphasizing breadth over depth. During the first half of the program, students will be required to take 16 "Foundation" courses, which are tied to four "signature themes": environmental studies; human performance; international studies; and science, technology, and society. The second half of the program is devoted to language study, concentration (major) courses, and "complementary learning," which emphasizes non-classroom-based learning, including work experience, study abroad, and a research project.
