Scruggs StyleScruggs style is a fingerpicking method of playing the banjo, typically using picks on the thumb and first two fingers of the right hand, with the ring and little fingers braced solidly on the head of the instrument. The style begins with development of a repetitive "roll", a sequence of strings picked in order. Notes within the roll are then fretted to insert the required melody. "Licks" or embellishments are then freely added to enhance the complexity of the music. The result is lively, rapid music which lends itself both as an accompaniment to other instruments and as a solo. It is named after Earl Scruggs, its first major proponent.
