Schleicher County, Texas

Schleicher County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 2,935. Its county seat is Eldorado6. The county is namred for Gustav Schleicher, a surveyor and politician.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,395 km² (1,311 mi²). 3,394 km² (1,311 mi²) of it is land and about 1 km² of it is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,935 people, 1,115 households, and 817 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 1,371 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.59% White, 1.53% Black or African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 18.98% from other races, and 2.62% from two or more races. 43.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,115 households out of which 34.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.60% are married couples living together, 7.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.70% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.12. In the county, the population is spread out with 27.90% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 24.00% from 25 to 44, 24.40% from 45 to 64, and 16.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.90 males. The median income for a household in the county is $29,746, and the median income for a family is $37,813. Males have a median income of $28,412 versus $22,250 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,969. 21.50% of the population and 16.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.00% of those under the age of 18 and 19.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
