Schaghticoke is a village located in the Town of Schaghticoke in Rensselaer County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 676. The Village of Schaghticoke is in the Town of Schaghticoke.

Geography

Schaghticoke is located at 42°53'58" North, 73°35'10" West (42.899551, -73.586128). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²). 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 18.89% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 676 people, 270 households, and 181 families residing in the village. The population density is 352.7/km² (916.3/mi²). There are 284 housing units at an average density of 148.2/km² (385.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.30% White, 1.48% Black or African American, 0.59% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 270 households out of which 34.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% are non-families. 25.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.03. In the village the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 32.0% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.5 males. The median income for a household in the village is $37,417, and the median income for a family is $44,432. Males have a median income of $36,510 versus $26,667 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,734. 8.3% of the population and 7.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.6% of those under the age of 18 and 12.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
