San Carlos, Arizona

San Carlos (Western Apache Sengaa) is a census-designated place located in Gila County, Arizona. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 3,716.

Geography

San Carlos is located at 33°21'4" North, 110°27'36" West (33.351069, -110.459862). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 22.9 km² (8.9 mi²). 22.9 km² (8.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.34% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 3,716 people, 921 households, and 754 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 162.5/km² (420.9/mi²). There are 994 housing units at an average density of 43.5/km² (112.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 4.55% White, 0.24% Black or African American, 92.63% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 2.05% from two or more races. 2.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 921 households out of which 49.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.1% are married couples living together, 29.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.1% are non-families. 14.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.00 and the average family size is 4.42. In the CDP the population is spread out with 42.1% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 15.8% from 45 to 64, and 5.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 24 years. For every 100 females there are 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.2 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $13,412, and the median income for a family is $14,219. Males have a median income of $16,216 versus $22,563 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $4,615. 58.8% of the population and 57.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 62.4% of those under the age of 18 and 56.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
